Rules of the Furness and South Lakeland Astronomical Society

Membership fees

Adult membership fee will be £20 per annum.
Associate membership fee will be £15 per annum.
Junior membership fee will be £10 per annum.
Group membership is available to schools (or similar) at the rate of £12 per annum. However, the maximum number of people attending meetings or observing sessions will be agreed by the committee. Normal meeting/observing fees will apply.
The membership fee for full time students and those in receipt of State Retirement Pension and/or any other long term State Benefits (with the exception of Child Benefit) will be £15 per annum. Full fees will only be payable by those in full-time employment.
Where more than one member resides at the same address, the second and subsequent members will pay £10 per annum.

Other fees

Each member attending a meeting where there is an 'external' speaker is requested to contribute £2 to help fund speaker expenses. Visitors are requested to contribute £3 when attending any meeting. Each person attending a meeting is requested to contribute a nominal sum to help with refreshment costs.

Meetings

Ordinary meetings will take place once per month with the exception of June, July and August. Meetings will commence at 7.30 pm and end at 10 pm. A maximum of 30 Minutes will be allowed for business matters (AGM excluding).
An Annual General Meeting will take place once per year (usually in May).
The Society financial year ends on 30th September and a financial report will be provided to members (usually at the November meeting).

Benefits

Adult, Junior and State Benefits members are entitled to the following upon payment of the appropriate fees. Attendance and refreshments for ten meetings at the current venue Availability of the Society Observatory and Telescopes at a nominal fee Use of the Society Library and Records, including book and video loans Provision of an ‘Astro-Calendar’ in January of each year of membership A copy of the minutes for any meeting which he/she could not attend A copy of the annual financial summary/treasurers report.

It is assumed Associate members will not attend regular meetings but are otherwise entitled to all other benefits listed above.

CONSTITUTION of the Furness and South Lakeland Astronomical Society

The Society shall be called the 'Furness and South Lakeland Astronomical Society. The aims of the Society are 'to advance the science of astronomy,
promote research, encourage an interest in the circulation of current information and lecture on the said science'.
The Officers of the Society and their duties are:
Chairman - preside over meetings of the Society.
Meetings Secretary - arranges speakers for the regular meetings and also outings to places, or events, of astronomical interest.
Treasurer & Membership Secretary - deals with all financial matters of the Society and administers the membership records.
Librarian - keeps records of and stores the Society's library items.
Instrument Curator - stores and maintains the Society's instruments.
Publicity Officer - informs the press of current events and publicizes the Society.
Web Master controls the Society internet pages.

All Officers will be elected by members at the A.G.M. of the Society for a period of one year.
Any Office becoming vacant before the A.G.M. will be filled at the first normal meeting. After an un-notified absence of three months,
the office will become vacant and a new Officer will be elected at the following normal meeting.
A Managing Committee shall be formed which will consist of the Chairman, Meetings Secretary and Treasurer & Membership Secretary.
No Managing Committee member may remain on the Committee for more than three years, unless no candidates come forward to take their place.
In this case the A.G.M. may extend the period.

The membership of the Society is open as follows:
Adult membership is open to anyone aged 16 years or over. Prospective members may attend one meeting without payment.
Associate membership is open to anyone who lives away from the locality or cannot attend meetings regularly.
Junior membership is open to anyone under the age of 16 years.

All members have equal voting rights.
Only current members may propose, amend or vote on any motion. Only current members may be elected as Officers of the Society.
Subscriptions will be due in October. New members joining during the year will pay inversely proportional subscriptions i.e.
those joining in the first quarter will pay full rate, second quarter 3/4 rate, third quarter ½ rate and fourth quarter 1/4rate.

Times, procedures, subscription amounts etc., shall be detailed in the Rules of the Society and these will, where necessary,
be amended at the A.G.M. by the majority of the voters. Postal/proxy votes are acceptable.
The A.G.M. will be held in May on the normal meeting date.
All motions for the A.G.M. should be in the hands of the Managing Committee not later than four weeks prior to the date of the meeting.
A quorum of at least six members, two of whom should be Committee members will be required before an A.G.M. is held.

Any other business may be raised at the A.G.M. after all business on the Agenda has been dealt with, subject to the approval of the majority of members present.

Motions amending the Constitution of the Society must be in the hands of the Managing Committee at least four weeks before the date of the A.G.M.
and must be passed by at least two thirds of the members present. The Managing Committee must give at least three weeks notice of such motions to the members.

The Constitution may also be amended by calling an extra-ordinary meeting with the above stipulations applying.

An Auditor shall audit the financial records of the Society at least annually and endorse the Balance Sheet prepared by the Treasurer & Membership Secretary. The Auditor shall not be a Society member.

The Managing Committee may award a prize to the member who, in the opinion of the Managing Committee, has contributed most to the Society over the twelve months prior to the A.G.M.

Two members of the Committee may call an Extra-ordinary General Meeting.
